The Daily Circuit: Lunate buys Brevan Howard stake + Humain’s data centers
👋 Hello from the Middle East!
In today’s Daily Circuit, we’re reporting on Saudi Arabia’s growing portfolio of U.S. equities, Masdar’s efforts to sell a 50% stake in its rooftop solar venture, the beginning of construction for Humain’s AI data centers and the UAE’s new trade pact with Angola. But first, Lunate takes a substantial minority stake in London’s Brevan Howard.
Abu Dhabi is pouring $2 billion into hedge fund powerhouse Brevan Howard to anchor a new investment hub in the Gulf.
The deal was set in motion by Abu Dhabi-owned asset manager Lunate’s agreement to acquire a minority stake in Brevan Howard and commit the funds to launch a new investor platform.
Lunate, which has more than $50 billion under management and is backed by Abu Dhabi’s ADQ and Chimera Capital – investment arms tied to Sheikh Tahnoun bin Zayed – said the partnership is designed to strengthen the city’s role as a global hub for alternative investments.
The venture will be based in the Abu Dhabi Global Market, the emirate’s international financial center, and will oversee funds tailored to global investors.
London-based Brevan Howard, which manages more than $35 billion worldwide and is best known for its macro trading and digital asset strategies, will contribute its investment expertise and client base to the new platform.
Brevan Howard’s founder, Alan Howard, said in a statement that thepartnership “reflects our deep and ongoing commitment to the region.”

The Daily Circuit: Space42 navigates to Africa + ACWA solar powers up
👋 Hello from the Middle East!
In today’s Daily Circuit, we’re reporting on the start of commercial operations at three ACWA Power solar plants in Saudi Arabia, ADIA’s minority stake in the buyout of U.S.-based software firm Dayforce and the search by organizers of the 2029 Asian Winter Games for an alternative site because of construction delays at NEOM’s Trojena ski resort. But first, Space42 navigates to Africa.
Space42, the Abu Dhabi-backed satellite communications company, is considering a new fundraising push to expand its satellite mapping project in Africa.
While the financing is in early talks and no formal target for the amount it will seek to raise has been set, the Space42 initiative aims to provide detailed maps for all of Africa’s 54 countries that can be used for logistics, disaster response and urban planning, Bloomberg reports.
Working with Microsoft and U.S. mapping firm Esri, Space42 has said it expects to license the data it collects to governments, and later make it available to businesses.
Space42’s potential funding efforts involve discussions with the African Union Development Agency and other financial institutions active on the continent, according to Bloomberg. Among Space42’s shareholders are the Mubadala sovereign wealth fund, G42 tech company and International Holding Co.
In a related development, Space42 has secured a $696 million export credit facility from European banks, backed by French export insurer Bpifrance, to develop its Al Yah 4 and 5 satellites with advanced, reconfigurable payloads, SpaceTech in Gulfreports.
The satellites are scheduled for launch in 2027 and 2028 and are part of a 17-year UAE government contract costing $5.1 billion.

NO SNOW
First came news stories earlier this week about construction delays and concerns about snowmaking capacity at NEOM’s planned Trojena desert ski resort. Now, the Financial Times reports that organizers of the 2029 Asian Winter Games are shopping for alternative countries in which to hold the competition because they fear the Saudi site won’t be ready. One part of the project requires blasting out huge amounts of rock and installing some 3,000 tension cables, a process that could take eight years, according to the FT. Trojena, which is 2,600 meters above sea level, is planned to have 30 kilometers of ski runs available between December and March each year. While there is some natural snow in the area, it is rare, and so the resort will rely completely on artificial snow.

As a result, off-plan property sales to British buyers in Dubai doubled in the second quarter of 2025 year-on-year, the report notes. More than 240,000 U.K. nationals currently reside in the city, underscoring its growing appeal as a wealth and lifestyle hub. “The UAE has firmly established itself as a safe harbour for wealth and talent at a time when many historically favoured markets are becoming increasingly unpredictable,” Arton Capital CEO Armand Arton said.

The Daily Circuit: Masdar swaps hydrogen for AI + Warburg Pincus in Dubai
👋 Hello from the Middle East!
In today’s Daily Circuit, we’re reporting on Aramco’s $90 billion pipeline of investments, Mideast expansion plans for Warburg Pincus under a new license from the Dubai Financial Services Authority, Presight’s Accelerator Bootcamp in Abu Dhabi for promising AI startups, and Egypt’s national mapping project to attract more investment for its mining industry. But first, green hydrogen bows to artificial intelligence at Masdar.
Abu Dhabi’s Masdar green energy company is shifting gears to focus on meeting the voracious power needs of AI data centers.
After budgeting billions of dollars for developing green hydrogen into a commercial fuel, Masdar has found few buyers and decided to reallocate its resources, Bloomberg reports.
ForMasdar, which is owned by the ADNOC national oil company, the TAQA national energy company, and the Mubadala sovereign wealth fund, lower-than-expected revenue figures told the story, CEO Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi says.
“Today, green hydrogen is under pressure and the market is shrinking. A lot of people who went into this venture are out. We are not,” Al Ramahi told Bloomberg. “But we also need to respect global dynamics.”
In the renewables industry, Masdar is not alone. Many of its peers around the world have invested deeply in green hydrogen amid broad excitement over the fuel’s promise for providing clean, cheap and plentiful energy. Weak demand and high costs, however, have forced the industry to pull back.
Instead, Masdar has decided to divert the money toward an expected boom in power consumption from AI data centers, Al Ramahi said. One of the world’s biggest such projects is the $545 million facility that the UAE’s du telecom company is planning with Microsoft.
“My basic business mandate isn’t hydrogen or aluminum or whatever,” Al-Ramahi said. “It is green electron capacity.”
In another area of its business, Al-Rahimi said Tuesday that a Madar-led consortium has secured $1.1 billion in financing from eight regional and international banks to support development of the 2-gigawatt Al Sadawi solar power plant in Saudi Arabia.

The vessels, which will be moored in Basra, are expected to add several hundred megawatts of generation capacity to the grid when they come online later this year, Bloomberg reports. Iraqi authorities noted that demand for electricity has surged during the summer, leading to extended periods of blackouts across several provinces. The order with Turkey’s Karpowership is part of a wider push to expand generation capacity through quick-deployment projects and international partnerships.

The Daily Circuit: NEOM’s melting ski slopes + Lenovo’s new Riyadh HQ
In today’s Daily Circuit, we’re reporting on Lenovo’s new regional headquarters in Riyadh, the start of construction on Oman’s undersea transcontinental telecom cable, the plush lounge Qatar Airways is planning for New York’s Kennedy Airport and chef Gordon Ramsay’s deal to open his branded culinary schools in Saudi Arabia. But first, NEOM’s melting ski slopes.
It isn’t easy to produce snow in the desert. That basic problem surrounding Saudi Arabia’s planned Trojena ski resort is emerging as a major test of the kingdom’s $1.5 trillion NEOM development as it races to fulfill its commitment to hosting the 2029 Asian Winter Games.
Introduced in 2022 as one of NEOM’s eye-popping, futuristic projects, Trojena is building ski slopes atop luxury hotel roofs, a lake hanging over a mountain cliff and a crystal skyscraper the size of the Eiffel Tower.
Estimated to cost $19 billion, Trojena is already likely to miss its target completion date of 2026, Bloomberg reports. That worries officials at the Asian Games, who generally expect key infrastructure to be in place well in advance of their major events.
Among concerns being raised are the challenges of pumping enough water up a mountain for a planned lake at Trojena, creating sufficient artificial snow and the difficulties of building at high altitudes in an area with complex topography.
NEOM, which is owned by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, maintains the project will meet its deadlines.
“The development of NEOM, including Trojena, is progressing according to a phased plan that emphasizes international standards, long-term sustainability and legacy outcomes,” the company said in a statement to Bloomberg. “Work on Trojena, Neom’s year-round mountain destination, continues.”

The Daily Circuit: Saudi PIF exits Meta + Core42 German data deal
In today’s Daily Circuit, we’re reporting on Saudi backing for France’s AI startup Mistral, Core42’s high-speed computing deal with Germany’s Northern Data, Pentagon approval for Bahrain’s potential $500 million rocket systems purchase, and Saudia’s effort to outfit its planes with Elon Musk’s Starlink internet service. But first, big divestments from the Public Investment Fund’s U.S. stock portfolio.
Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund bid a lucrative goodbye to Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta stock after the tech company’s shares rose 28% in the second quarter.
The divestment of nearly 668,000 shares by the $1 trillion sovereign wealth fund from Facebook’s corporate parent was one of the PIF’s biggest exits, according to a Bloomberg analysis of its latest 13F U.S. regulatory filing.
The Riyadh-based fund, which leads the kingdom’s efforts to diversify the economy from its historic dependence on oil revenues, also sold off its holdings in FedEx, Shopify and Alibaba during the quarter ended June 30.
While divesting from Meta, the PIF made new investments in Uber and Lucid Group, as well in video-game makers Electronic Arts and Take-Two Interactive Software, which now rank among the fund’s top holdings.
The PIF, meanwhile, cut the value of Neom, Red Sea Global and other mega-projects by 12% or $8 billion last year, amid lower oil prices and broad efforts to address the kingdom’s fiscal deficit, Bloomberg reported this week.

ELON LINK
Saudia Airlines is talking with Elon Musk’s SpaceX to bring Starlink’s high-speed internet to more than 140 of its aircraft. If signed, the deal would mark SpaceX’s entry into the Gulf’s largest economy, even as local rival Neo Space Group races to develop its own in-flight service, Bloomberg reports. While Saudia, the country’s flagship airline, did not comment on the news, its chief guest experience officer, Rossen Dimitrov, said in a post on LinkedIn that he recently toured SpaceX’s industrial complex in Texas to explore “the exciting future they are bringing to aviation.” Starlink’s airline service follows a subscription model, with upfront hardware costs of $300,000 to $500,000 per plane plus a monthly fee per seat. SpaceX is also in talks with Emirates, Flydubai, and Gulf Air, the news agency added.
LEASEBACK FINANCE
Saudi Aramco has created a new shale gas company with an $11 billion financing package from a consortium led by BlackRock. As part of the leaseback deal, the group agreed to lease Jafurah Midstream Gas Co.’s assets for 20 years before ownership reverts to the Aramco unit, Reuters reports. The arrangement is similar to borrowing and is being used by Gulf oil-producing countries to raise money to diversify their economies while promising investors a stable revenue stream, the news agency said. The $100 billion Jafurah project, potentially the biggest shale gas project outside the United States, is central to Aramco’s ambitions to become a major global player in natural gas and boost its gas production capacity by 60% by 2030 from 2021 levels, according to Reuters.

In today’s Daily Circuit, we’re reporting on the Saudi Public Investment Fund’s $8 billion writedown on Neom and other mega-projects, how Aramco and DHL are seeking investment for their regional logistics venture, the rising numbers of international companies establishing Middle East HQs in Riyadh and opposition within the Egyptian cabinet to the IMF-ordained divestment of state assets to pay off debt. But first, the “mega forces” behind the Gulf’s ever-growing assets under state management.
The $5 billion in assets held by Gulf sovereign wealth funds is providing a soft cushion against ping-ponging regional conflicts from Gaza to Iran.
Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, the Qatar Investment Authority and the rainbow of UAE sovereign funds, such as Mubadala and the Investment Corp. of Dubai keep building their influence in global markets despite the nearby mayhem, Bloomberg Businessweek reportsin a broad examination of the phenomenon.
Among the geopolitical shocks this year was Iran’s missile barrage in June at an American air base in Qatar. Just hours after one of the most direct attacks on U.S. assets in the Middle East in years, it was business as usual in the capital city of Doha and its financial markets, the news agency said.
The Middle East, according to the BlackRock Investment Institute, finds itself at the intersection of three “mega forces” affecting investing now: geopolitical fragmentation, the energy transition and artificial intelligence, Ben Powell, BlackRock’s chief investment strategist for the Asia-Pacific and Middle East, tells Bloomberg.
“We are back to feeling quite constructive,” Powell says, “while of course being appropriately nervous and watchful around the geopolitical risk, which is ongoing, real and unpredictable.”

The Daily Circuit: OPEC faces record surplus + Mubadala-Cain property venture
In today’s Daily Circuit, we’re reporting on Mubadala Capital’s luxury real estate venture with Cain International, IPO plans for Saudi Arabia’s Marketing Home Group, Dubai’s pavilion at Germany’s Gamescom 2025 and the Venice debut of Saudi director Shahad Ameen’s new film, “Hijira.” But first, the International Energy Agency projects a record oil surplus next year.
Sluggish demand for oil and the lifting of two-year-old production cuts by Saudi Arabia and other OPEC+ nations are likely to create a record world surplus next year, the International Energy Agency said today. Oil inventories are projected to accumulate at a rate of 2.96 million barrels a day, surpassing the average buildup during the pandemic year of 2020, data from the Paris-based organization’s monthly report showed. World oil demand this year and next is growing at less than half the pace in 2023.
Oil supplies, meanwhile, are soaring. OPEC+ has accelerated its lifting of output curbs and the IEA has raised production forecasts for the Americas and other regions in 2026.
“Oil-market balances look ever more bloated as forecast supply far eclipses demand towards year-end and in 2026,” the IEA said in its report. “It is clear that something will have to give for the market to balance.” Crude prices have declined roughly 12% this year, trading near $66 a barrel today in London.
